BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

The exceptional is becoming the norm and amazing is the goal for Bartlesville High School sophomore pole vaulter Wesley Turner.

On Friday Turner sailed through the rarified air of history, becoming the first ever Bruin to clear the bar at 16-feet to conquer the event at the Bartlesville Patriot Bruin Classic at Custer Stadium.

In fact Turner set a new school record for the fourth-straight meet — 15-6 to win the 2024 state championship, 15-7 back on March 7 at Owasso, 15-9 on March 13 at Tulsa Union and Friday’s towering flight.

How significant is 16 feet?

It’s only been achieved twice in state meet competition since 2018 and is less than two feet away from the state record.

Turner’s pole vault title was one of four individual championships won by Bartlesville at its home meet Friday.

Others included: Russell Miller (boys 800m run), Michael Murphy (boys discus), and Kadance Barnett (girls long jump).

Barnett also turned in an outstanding performance, finishing second in three girls’ events — the 100m dash, the 200m dash and the high jump.

Bartlesville recorded a combined 10 first and second place medalists in individual events. Miller rocketed to second place in the boys 1600 (4:34.34), shaving several seconds off his previous best. Bryce Lee landed in second place in the boys high jump (6-0). Hailey Taylor came in runner-up in the girls pole vault (9-6).

Third-place showings in individual events for Bartlesville included: Michael Taylor (boys 110m hurdles) and Parker Fielder (girls pole vault).

Rounding out Bartlesville’s Top 10 individual placers were: Cooper Middlebusher (boys discus, 4th), Michael Taylor (boys 110m hurdles, 5th; boys high jump, 5th), Hailey Taylor (girls 100m hurdles, 5th; girls 300m hurdles, 6th), Cameron Bishop (boys long jump, 5th; boys high jump, 9th), Fielder (girls 100m hurdles, 6th), Turner (boys 110m hurdles, 8th), Alayna Nightingale (girls high jump, 7th; girls 100m hurdles, 7th; girls 300m hurdles, 8th), Theresa Hamilton (girls 300m hurdles, 9th), Ivan Griffith (boys 200m dash, 10th), and Evelynn Pratt (girls 400m dash, 10th).

David Ayres is the Bartlesville High track coach.

NOTE: Former Bartlesville High School student-athlete Athan Nickles returned with the Stillwater High team and finished second in the boys 110m hurdles (:15.39).
