BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Following are reports of Bartlesville High School soccer last week.

BOYS SOCCER

Following an arduous 0-3 season start, the Bruin kickers have made an ardent turnaround this week.

It started with a 2-1 victory last Tuesday against Bishop Kelley, with Klayton Bastings in goal. Austin Bastings’ goal was the difference in the matchup.

Bastings and Braxton Decker — two of the captains — helped provide the leadership that kept the team focused throughout the fierce battle, acting head coach Hosteen Walsh said.

“All three of our captains (including Klayton Bastings) do a great job of keeping us together,” he added.

The Bruins (2-3) followed up Thursday night with a 4-0 rout of visiting Tulsa Rogers.

Decker delivered the first two goals — the first one on a free kick from about 25 yards out that made a direct bee-line into the net.

Austin Bastings assisted Decker on the other goal.

Rounding out the Bruins’ goal makers were Carson Cole and freshman Daniel Lopez. Cole scored off a corner kick and Lopez found the back of the net at the end of a breakaway move.

An ecstatic large home crowd at Custer Stadium roared its approval on all four goals as well as the Bruins’ high level of play all evening.

“We just had great intensity overall,” Walsh said. “We played with a lot of hard work ethic … to … keep the game in control.”

On the defensive side, Klayton Bastings locked the door in front of the Bruin goal, thanks largely to the play of the defensive line, which included warriors Parker Spangenberg and Jacob Robledo.

“We have a good group back there,” Walsh said.

Two of the team’s standouts also have settled on their college address to continue their soccer careers — Austin Bastings at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Miami, Okla.) and Decker at Southern Nazarene University (Bethany).

GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Bruins closed out the week by rolling past Tulsa Rogers, 3-0, witnessed by a large crowd at Custer Stadium. The happy fans unleashed their highest level of verbal approbation.

Earlier in the week, however, the Lady Bruins had endured a 7-2 loss to Bishop Kelley. Rebekah Stephens and Brooke Baker each scored a goal for the Lady Bruins.

But on Thursday night the Lady Bruins snapped back to slam the door on Tulsa Rogers.

Racking up goals for Bartlesville were Kinzie Doss, Presli Cox and Baker. Ava Carter recorded an assist.

On the back end, goalie Lily Weimer threw up a wall against the Rogers’ scoring attack.

Giving her big support were Maci Alleman and Taylor Bradford.

“They’re both freshmen and were both standouts tonight,” coach Spencer White said.

He felt Bartlesville’s attitude set the winning tone.

“It was definitely our mentality from the start,” he said. “Our girls felt real hunger going into this game and were ready to win and we definitely took it to them.”

Bartlesville opens district play at Owasso this week.
