To put it simply, none of the other 20 teams in this week’s Dewey High School meet could keep up with the Joneses.
Camrin Jones rocketed to a personal best in the girls’ 400m dash to win first place and also soared higher than the rest of the field in the girls’ high jump. She grabbed second in the girls’ long jump.
Meanwhile, Addi Jones (no direct relationship according to coach Dan Close) helped Dewey capture the championship in the girls’ 4x400m relay battle.
Both Jones’ girls ran on the winning relay squad along with Presley Smith and Chanley Herren.
“I can not remember the last time our girls won the mile (4x400) relay in a meet this big,” Close said.
Smith, meanwhile, made a blazing debut as a freshman. In addition to her role on the winning 4x400m relay, she also finished second in the girls’ 400m, 800m and 1600m runs.
Eden McKinney came up McBig by winning the girls’ 100m hurdles.
Dewey finished second in the girls’ standings.
On the boys side, Keidon Holt blazed to first place in both the 110m and 300m hurdles — breaking the 40-second barrier for the first time in the latter event.
Holt also helped spearhead Dewey to first place in the boys’ 4x400m relay. Rounding out the foursome were Tra Hicks, Kavery Weathers and Cayden Artherton.
In the 1600m run, Scott Horton heard the “oohs” from Dewey fans as he rumbled to second place.
Ryan Frisinger surged to third place in the 3200m run.
“I thought it was a great first track meet,” said Close. “The weather was perfect. I was very proud to be the coach of these kids. A lot of their times and distances I did not (forecast) us doing in our first meet. I think we have a chance to take more people to the state meet than we have before.”
Dewey competed Friday at the Bartlesville track meet.
