COPAN BASEBALL

The Copan Hornets (8-4) have played this week with a super stinger.

After beating Caney Valley on Thursday, 7-3, they looked like title contenders for the Nowata tourney.

Here are details from Copan’s last two wins, which extended their win streak to four straight.

COPAN 12, SOUTH COFFEYVILLE 0 — Pitching by committee netted a shutout for Copan. Zane Stricklin, Shooter Brewington, Xavier Alston and Zane Agnew each took a turn on the mound.

Brewington also lit up the offense by launching a double to the left field gap during his first at-bat. He later singled.

Jarrett Shambles added two singles.

“Overall, we just put the ball in play a lot,” said Copan head coach Daniel Wren.

COPAN 7, CANEY VALLEY 3 (Nowata tourney) — Brewington proved to be the bulldozer closer.

During their most threatening inning, the Caney Valley Trojans loaded the bases with no outs and were poised to take the lead. Copan recorded a first out by throwing a runner out at the plate. But, the next batter socked a long hit that scored both baserunners. Brewington then settled down to strike out the next two batters.

Copan answered with a five-run inning, led off by an infield single by Rocky Thomas. Alston reached base on a walk, Jarrett Shambles singled and Brewington walked. Stricklin ripped a 1-and-2 pitch for a three-run hit down the right field line.

Stricklin recorded two singles on the night.

Wren also praised the work of both his pitchers, Alston as the starter and Brewington as the closer in the final 2.2 innings.

Both pitchers “did a good job of keeping everything small,” Wren said.

Just like Brewington, Alston came through with clutch pitches with runners on base, Wren added.
