BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
Following is a roundup of area high school sports action last weekend.
__________
DEWEY BASEBALL SATURDAY
The Bulldoggers finished as Sperry tourney champion runner-ups after colliding Saturday with the Bishop Kelley jayvee buzzsaw.
Bishop Kelly pounded 12 hits, took advantage of 13 walks and played errorless baseball to beat the Doggers, 12-4.
Dewey’s offense also filled the paths with baserunners — thanks to nine walks (including two each by Easton Davis and Jay Murguia). But the Doggers came up a few clutch hits shy of finishing unbeaten for the weekend.
Nathan Sloan provided Dewey its strongest bat — a double and two singles.
Parker Garrison, Eddie Rice, Ringer and Murguia each drove in a Dewey run.
Dewey used six pitchers to try to bring Bishop Kelley’s offense in check, including starter Cooper Wood, who suffered the loss. K. Johnson allowed only one earned run in two innings and Murguia tossed two-third of a scoreless frame.

DEWEY BASEBALL FRIDAY
If Dewey could market its formula for getting the most mileage out of a non-plentiful amount of fuel, vehicle travel might be revolutionized.
Despite producing only five hits and two stolen bases the Bulldoggers raced past the Tulsa NOAH Jaguars, 11-4, in the Sperry tourney semifinals.
Nathan Sloan ripped a double and a single and drove in two runs to Dewey’s hitting attack. Layne Gastel added a double and RBI. Also driving in one run apiece were Easton Davis, Chase Miller (on a sacrifice fly), Levi Wilson, Eddie Rice and Brayden Ringer.
Davis and Jay Murguia each walked twice and forced home a run. Scoring two runs apiece were Davis, Parker Garrison and Murguia. Gastel put down a sacrifice.
Southpaw Lathe Griggs pitched the distance, spinning a four-hitter with two walks and three K’s, with Miller as his catcher. None of NOAH’s runs were earned.
B. Harrison drove in two runs for NOAH.

COPAN-NOWATA BASEBALL
Nowata found itself in shambles — or, rather, against Shambles — during a wind-blown Friday fray in Copan.
Pitcher Jarrett Shambles helped fuel a gust of momentum that propelled Copan to the 5-2 victory.
Shambles and catcher Shooter Brewington combined to shut out Nowata the final six innings after allowing two runs in the first frame.
“We played through the wind,” said Copan head coach Daniel Wren. “I told my guys before the game the team that could handle the wind the best would win. … But the wind didn’t play a huge factor. … There was only one flyball dropped and fortunately it wasn’t us. … I felt both teams handled the wind pretty well.”
Nowata blasted a homer in the first inning, and scored another run, but Shambles bore down in smothering fashion the rest of the way.
“It never really close,” Wren said about Copan’s lead. “We were able to play clean defensively for the most part.”
Copan improved to 3-3 going into spring break. Next up, the Hornets play host Thursday (March 20) against Foyil.
Nowata (0-5) will seek its first win Monday (March 17) in a home doubleheader against Summit Christian.
