Welcome to today's inaugural Bartlesville Area Sports Report Super Bowl Bragging Rights competition.
As everyone in the civilized family of man knows, the 59th Edition of the Big Prance pits the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs against the high-phlying Philadelphia Eagles.
More than 125 of your neighbors — across the ubiquitous street or from another part of the nation — have clawed their brains to yank out the winning score for today's Super Bowl.
One of our contest warriors — nicknamed D.L. — reminded us that while the Kansas City Chiefs are trying to become the first team to win three-straight Super Bowls, the Green Bay Packers won three-consecutive NFL championships from 1929-31 and 1965-67.
Other noteworthy streaks: The Buffalo Bills won four-consecutive AFC championships (1990-93) but lost all four years in the Super Bowl; the New England Patriots captured three-straight AFC titles (2016-18); and the Miami Dolphins won three straight AFC titles (1971-73).
Interestingly, no team has ever captured three NFC titles in a row. The same can be said for the original AFL (1960-69).
(For the newly baptized pro football fans, the original NFL lasted from 1920-1969, while the original AFL came into being as a competing league in 1960. In 1970 the leagues merged to create the modern-day NFL, comprised of the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. Three original NFL teams joined the AFC in 1970 to balance the number of teams in each conference — the Baltimore Colts, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns. The Super Bowl was created pre-merger in 1966 to match up the NFL champion vs. the AFL champion. The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls. Since 1970, the Super Bowl has featured the NFC king vs. the AFC king.)
