BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Only one word describes Dewey High School’s performance at Friday’s Bartlesville Patriot Bruin Classic.

Phantasmagorical.

Going shoulder-to-shoulder against a field that included 10 Class 4A-6A schools, plus a top-notch home school team, scrappy Class 3A Dewey made a gigantic conquest without even the aid of a slingshot.

Like a small army of frenzied phantoms, the upstart Doggers and Lady Doggers stormed to four championships and three runner-up spots in individual competition.

How did those numbers compare with the Big Guys like Bartlesville, Stillwater, Bixby, Collinsville, etc.?

Dewey tied with Bartlesville for the most combined first-place or second-place individual event medals (seven apiece) on the day.

Capturing first-place titles for Dewey were: Keidon Holt (boys 110m hurdles), Londyn Bond (girls shot put), Kavery Weathers (boys 300m hurdles) and Camrin Jones (girls high jump).

Eden McKinney swept to two second-place medals (girls 100m hurdles and 300 hurdles) and Jones claimed second place in the girls long jump.

Chanley Herren surged to third place in the girls 300m hurdles.

Other Top 10 finishes for Dewey in girls’ competition included: Kyla Overton (shot put, 4th), Mackenzie Hedges (high jump, 6th), Presley Smith (400m dash, 7th; 800m dash, 8th), Lacey Nichols (discus, 8th), Jones (400m dash, 9th), Preslee Woods (100m hurdles, 9th), Sayde Guilfoyle (300m hurdles, 10th)

Weathers finished fourth in the 110m hurdles for the Dewey boys’ only other Top 10 individual showing.

Dewey is tutored by veteran head coach Dan Close, who might be blessed with one of his most powerful-ever all-around contingents.

Following is a closer look at Dewey’s individual results at Bartlesville.

(Note: A follow-up from Dewey’s home meet last week is planned later this week.)
