The following is a roundup of area baseball from last week.
__________
COPAN BASEBALL
Copan battled to a 1-1 record in the opening week — but the loss featured a tremendous Hornet comeback.
Following are more details.
COPAN 8, SOUTH COFFEYVILLE 0 — Freshman Zane Agnew hurled masterfully for Copan in Saturday’s shutout classic. He recorded eight strikeouts in four innings.
On the offensive side, Shooter Brewington lashed a single, drew a walk and reached base as a hit batsman. Xavier Alston also reached base on two bunts that advanced runners.
But overall the offense struggled despite scoring eight runs, said veteran head coach Daniel Wren.
QUAPAW 14, COPAN 13 — Talk about your explosive storylines! During the fifth inning Quapaw bolted to a 12-5 lead and had the winning run in scoring position. But the Hornets cut down the would-be walk-off run at home when shortstop Josh Thomas pegged a throw from shallow left field to catcher Zane Stricklin for the third out tag.
Copan then unleashed a tidal wave of offense in the top of the seventh, scoring eight times to go ahead, 13-12.
Some of the highlights of the seventh-inning uprising included: Brewington ripping two singles, Alston walking twice and Stricklin lashing a base hit.
“We had a lot of walks and putting the ball in play,” Wren characterized the comeback. “It was not like we were hitting doubles into the gap. … Instead of laying over and dying, we made it tough for Quapaw to put us away.”
Copan eyes a busy week — a three-way round-robin Monday at home against Barnsdall and Ripley, a road trip on Thursday to Oaks, a showdown Friday against Nowata and a Saturday excursion to Wyandotte for the Twin Bridges Festival.

CANEY VALLEY BASEBALL
The short-handed Caney Valley Trojans (only nine players in uniform) burst into the season with a pair of rivalry wins.
CANEY VALLEY 7, NOWATA 2 — The Trojans brought the whole house to their season opener. Hayden House started on the bump and threw four innings with six strikeouts.
Logan Thompson and Logan Horsman took turns pitching in relief. Bryor Bonde caught.
“We pitched really well,” said CV head coach Andy Fox.
Offensively, the Trojans stranded several runners but still managed to push seven runs across the plate.
Horsman belted two hits.
“We scored runs on fielder’s choice and passed balls,” Fox explained.
CANEY VALLEY 8, HOMINY 4 — Horsman “pitched four fantastic innings to keep us in the lead,” Fox said. “Bryor Bonde pitched the last three innings.”
Fueled by a leadoff single and stolen base by Horsman, the Trojan offense found its groove early to score three runs in the first inning.
Thompson drove in four runs, including a two-run single. House was hit by a pitch to force home another run. Preston Gipson also delivered multiple base hits.
The Trojans went to battle in these two games with only one senior, Fox said.
Fox is looking forward to more players getting healthy and returning to action.

The Doggers are off to a sizzling 4-0 start, including a 10-7 win Saturday against Class 5A Tulsa Washington.
