BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Following are roundups of recent Bartlesville area Class 3A and smaller high school basketball action.

__________

BOYS: Dewey

DEWEY 62, OKLAHOMA UNION 54 (January 13) — Austin Eastman poured in 32 points to pace the Dewey Bulldoggers to their fifth season win. The Doggers (5-5) also won back-to-back games for the first time.

“This was a real good game,” said Dewey head coach Lance Knight. “Oklahoma Union has a good team.”

The teams met in the fifth-place game of the Oologah tourney.

OKLAHOMA UNION 42, DEWEY 41 (ot) (January 14) — What a difference 24 hours made. The teams met for the second-straight night — this time in a regular season game — at Dewey.

Kooper Crawford tallied 12 points for Dewey (5-6), followed by Jay Murguia with eight, Eastman with seven, Cooper Wood with five; Karson Johnson with five; and Tra Hicks with four.

Connor Pierce piled up 19 points for Oklahoma Union, followed by Deakyn Hendrix, seven;  Kaden Miller, six; Jaxon Baker, four; K. Nash, three; and Bodee West, three.

Dewey missed a shot at the end of regulation and overtime that would have reversed the outcome.

Dewey went to war without starting point guard Zach Renfroe, due to illness, Knight said. He praised Murguia for stepping in to feel the void effectively.

Despite coming out on the losing end, Knight heaped praise upon his team’s effort and also celebrated the fierce competition.

“We left it all on the court,” he said. “We had a lot of mental errors that cost us.”

GIRLS: Dewey

DEWEY 52, OKLAHOMA UNION 30 (January 14) - Dewey coach Michael Sanders was able to go deep into the Lady Doggers bench with their win over the Lady Cougars.

“We played really good defense and caused a lot of turnovers,” said Sanders. “We also got a lot of help from the bench tonight.”

Presley Smith led the way for Dewey (4-6) with 15 points, followed by Matney Epperson with nine and Shaylyn Ishem with eight points. Chanley Herren and C.J. Jones both had five a piece.

GIRLS: Caney Valley Lady Trojans

CANEY VALLEY 46, AFTON 24 (January 11) — In the first-round tourney game, the Lady Trojan defense dominated.

“Defensively, we were really aggressive,” Longan said. “It worked for our benefit.”

All seven players in uniform scored for Caney Valley — Adesta Henry, 10; Sydni Brown, eight; Roxi Hawkins, seven; Aliah Harvey, seven; Abby Daigle, six; Jaycee Tant, five; and Jocelyn Chancellor, three.

CHELSEA 48, CANEY VALLEY 33 (January 13) — Despite coming out on the short end, Caney Valley head coach Deric Longan praised the effort of his girls.

“I felt like it was one of the better games we played this year,” he said. “Chelsea has things we don’t have, like experience.”

The game capped the Chelsea tourney. Caney Valley’s Henry and Hawkins both landed a berth on the All-Tournament team. For this game, Henry tallied 10 points, followed by Brown, eight; Hawkins, six; Daigle, six; Harvey, two; and Tant, one.

“Our youngsters battled them through three-and-a-half quarters,” Longan added. “I was very, very proud.”

CANEY VALLEY 55, NOWATA 33 (January 14) — The Lady Trojans (7-4) surged to a 31-14 halftime lead and never looked back.

“Our defense was really flying around,” Longan said. “We shot the ball pretty well in the first half,” hitting four three pointers.

Daigle and Henry amassed 17 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Lady Trojans, followed by Hawkins with eight, Tant with seven, Brown with six, Faith Davis with three and Harvey with three.

Daigle’s three-point shooting early helped the Lady Trojans build on their lead, the coach noted.

“Even with our loss to Chelsea, I feel (Caney Valley players) have really bought in defensively. They cause a lot of havoc on the defensive end.”

BOYS: Copan

COPAN 48, BUFFALO 44 (January 13) — Shooter Brewington dialed in 27 points to help ring up the Cherokee tourney consolation championship for the Copan Hornets.  Brewington ripped the nets for six three-pointers (in 10 attempts) and shot 5-of-8 from two-point territory.

“He’s clicking offensively,” Copan head coach Kolton Stacy said. “He’s a three-level scorer.”

Jarrett Shambles added 12 points in this tourney game.

With two minutes to go Copan led by five after Brewington scored on a back-door play. Buffalo answered with a three-ball to pull within two points.

That’s when senior Karson Woodworth answered the call.

“He hadn’t scored all night,” Stacy said. “The fouled him and he iced the game with two free throws. … He’s a three-year starter and a kid that does whatever I ask him to do.”

Stacy labeled the performance as “a total team effort.”

Copan hosts Shidler on Thursday (January 16) and travels Friday (January 17) to Prue.

__________

BOYS: Nowata

Nowata’s defense has been spot-on the past two games by allowing a total of just 61 points.

NOWATA 58, CHOUTEAU 28 (January 13) — In finishing off the Chelsea tournament, the Ironmen thrived with a deep scoring list and shut-down ballguarding.

Ironmen head coach Derrick Ott said that anytime a team is held to less than 30 points it’s an impressive feat.

Ott also called off the dogs early, playing the fourth quarter with his jayvee teams.

Contributing points were: Clint Harrington, 13; Chelo Prince, 10; Talon Thomson, eight; Adrian O’Dell, six; Sebastian Brown, four; Jacob Forehand, four; Caleb Woolman, four, Kason Summer, two; Ryan Walton, two; Richards, two.

NOWATA 47, CANEY VALLEY 33 (January 14): In Tuesday’s battle, Harrington and Thompson scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, followed by Thompson with 10, in Nowata’s fourth game in five days.

Asked about the main key, Ott responded: “Our defensive intensity in the second half was pretty good and we rebounded well.”

Even though Nowata players struggled on the offensive end they didn’t let it affect their play on defense, he added.

Rounding out the Nowata scorers were Prince, five; Ty Williams, three; Walton, two; Brown, two.
