They say hardship doesn’t create character — it reveals it.

If that’s the case, the Nowata Ironmen displayed plenty of pluck in plowing past the Chelsea Green Dragons in the consolation semifinals Friday (Dec. 13) at the Ty Hewitt Memorial Tournament in Nowata.

How’s this for a storyline: Nowata catapulted to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter, fell behind in the third quarter and recovered the momentum to win.

While Nowata coach Derrick Ott would have rather avoided the roller-coaster exploit, he said the way it played out was “something very positive for us.”

He added it highlighted Nowata’s gain in experience since last season.

Clint Harrington and Talon Thompson both scored in double figures for Nowata.

BOYS: Copan 48, Barnsdall 47

This game evolved into a dramatic standoff that Copan yanked out in come-from-behind fashion and then held on despite missing two crucial free throws in the final four seconds.

“I was super proud of them,” said Copan head coach Kolton Stacy. “This was not an easy win. … They bucked up whenever it was time to buck up.”

At stake was the third-place spot in the Copan tourney after both teams had fallen in Thursday’s semifinals.

Copan spurted to a 30-23 halftime lead to put Barnsdall back on its heels.

“We played really good in the first half,” said Stacy “We played great defense. We pressed some which led to some easy buckets.”

During halftime Barnsdall coach Wade Corder made some astute adjustments that altered the tenor of the game.

“It was a good second half,” Stacy said. “They came storming back in the third quarter.”

As the game wound down Barnsdall led by three prior to Copan’s Shooter Brewington dropping in a three-pointer to tie the score.

In the final minute Jarrett Shambles put in a trey to put Copan ahead by a point. After Copan missed two free throws with four seconds left, Barnsdall managed to get off a 26-footer that missed the mark as the final buzzer sounded.

Shambles and Brewington scored 17 and 14, respectively.

Stacy also praised the effort of Kane Foreman.

“He’s rebounding the ball well for us,” Stacy said. “He’s our safe outlet. … He calms us down. In moments of chaos he seems to be the one everybody looks at.”

Copan travels Tuesday (Dec. 17) to Wesleyan Christian School and Friday (Dec. 20) to Bluejacket.

The Lady Mustangs surged to victories at the Copan tourney to continue their best start in several years.

They opened up by crumpling Foyil, 45-28, behind the scoring of Lydia Foster and Chloe Harper with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

Rounding out the scorers were Whitlie Tennison and Emily Christenson with six apiece and Miranda Hadrava with four.

Next up, WCS edged CedarVale-Dexter, (Kan.), 39-38, in the semifinals.

Harper poured in four points and also provided intense defense at point guard.

Foster expended much energy guarding the best player on the Kansas squad.

With WCS clinging to a one-point lead, Hadrava knocked down two insurance free throws to make the defense’s job easier.

But in the championship game, South Coffeyville bolted past the Lady Mustangs, 52-29.

“We didn’t really play great,” said WCS head coach Kendall Huntington. “We fought hard but we made a lot of mistakes.”

BOYS: Coffeyville (Kan.) 56, Nowata 44

Harrington poured in 19 points, followed by Chelo Prince with 11 to lead the Nowata Ironmen’s valiant effort in defeat.

“Coffeyville is super athletic,” said Ott.

However it wasn’t Coffeyville’s aggressiveness or quickness that made the difference more than its shooting woes.

“We shot really, really poor,” said Ott.

Ott also pointed to tired legs as a factor. Nowata had played late Friday night and had to be back on the floor early Saturday afternoon to face Coffeyville.

Nowata will finish its December schedule with road games at Chelsea on Thursday (Dec. 19) and at Commerce on Friday (Dec. 20).
