Basketball victories aren’t achieved just by scoring points, but also involve teamwork, determination and sacrifice.

The Dewey Lady Dogger showed all of those traits last week, bringing home the Adair Tournament’s consolation trophy.

“I want to give props to all my girls for their efforts that don’t show up on the state sheet,” said head coach Michael Sanders. “Diving on the floor for loose balls and sacrificing their bodies to take charge.”

The Lady Doggers started the tourney with a loss to Adair, 46-34 in the first round on Monday (Dec. 9), but fought their way to the consolation win by beating Wyandotte, 50-22 on Friday and the Adair jayvee, 49-36 on Saturday.

Sanders said his squad had their best shooting start of the season in their win over Wyandotte.

“Everything was clicking,” he said. “Defensively we were solid and caused a lot of turnovers for layups.”

Presley Smith led in scoring against Wyandotte with 19 points. Mylee Garrison had seven points and CJ Jones, Chanley Herren and Shaylyn Ishem all had six points a piece.

In Saturday’s consolation game, the Lady Doggers jumped out to an 8-0 lead, however the Adair jayvee battled back.

“We were able to make separation and keep it a 13-point lead the rest of the way,” said Sanders.

Presley led in scoring again with 16, followed by Jones with 11, Herren with six and Matney Epperson added five points.

“I’m super proud of the way the girls battled and performed,” said Sanders. “The last two years we got last place in the tournament so it was a major confidence boost for the girls to walk out with a trophy.”

Dewey (3-2) hosts Chelsea on Tuesday (Dec. 17).
