BOYS: WCS 70, Regent Prep 59 (ot)

Twenty wins in high school basketball has a magical ring to it.

The Wesleyan Christian School Mustangs heard that gong on Tuesday night when they outlasted a strong Regent Prep crew, 70-59, in overtime.

The Mustangs finished the regular season at 20-3 — their best-ever prep-playoff record.

“We had a great fourth quarter,” said fourth-year WCS head coach Steven Cooks. “We were trailing most the game but kept it within reach.”

At one point Regent Prep went up by 12 points; the Mustangs answered with a 20-point stampede in the fourth period.

“We got up, but they tied it up by the end of regulation,” Cooks said. “We went into overtime and we outscored them, 15-4.”

Trey White and Kyle Kelley poured in 16 and 15 points, respectively, to lead WCS. Zander Week also added to the point total. -

GIRLS: Regent Prep 40, Wesleyan Christian 32

Wesleyan Christian found an answer - Lady Mustang Miranda Hadrava - to Regent Prep’s top scorer on Tuesday night. Although WCS fell, 40-32 to Regent Prep, head coach Kendall Huntington said she was impressed with her team’s defensive play.

This was the two team’s second meeting this season, with Regent Prep downing the Lady Mustangs, 44-40 earlier this year.

“The last time we played them (Jan. 3), their best player had 23 points,” Huntington said. “Miranda didn’t allow any space to get open looks. She held her girl to only six points.”

GIRLS: Copan 68, Bluejacket 58

In their final home basketball game, Elyzabeth Odum and Kamryn Van left a lasting memory. They both scored 20 points (24 and 21, respectively) to help power Copan to a shoot-out win. Van knocked down five three-pointers.

Rounding out the scoring list were Zoey Secondine, 11 points; Kaylee Woodworth, six; Izzy Sheaffer, three; Rylee Preston, two; and Aimee Nitler, one.

“It was a phenomenal offensive night for us,” said Copan assistant coach Kirsten Ergenbright. “Our defense was not where it should have been.”

Ergenbright — who filled in for head coach Kristy Bryan while Bryan assisted to the birth of a grandchild, and a former Dewey High player (Kirsten Myers) — said Copan came out with all guns firing.

“We had a hot hand early,” Ergenbright said. “We just kept the momentum.”

The engaged bench players and energized crowd added to a celebratory atmosphere, she added.  _

BOYS: Copan 80, Bluejacket 53

What a second half!

After trailing at halftime, 32-28, the Copan Hornets got downright riled. They ripped the nets for 52 points in the second half to bludgeon Bluejacket in the regular season finale for both teams.

Shooter Brewington and Jarrett Shambles dialed in 23 and 16 points, respectively, to fuel the Copan attack.

Karson Woodworth stepped up in the Senior Night game to excel running the point and finishing with 14 points.

“He was seeing the floor better than anybody else,” said Copan head coach Kolton Stacy.

The next two-high Copan scorers were Kane Foreman, nine points; and Teegan Caron, eight. Caron picked up his fourth foul early in the second half, which opened the door for Woodworth to make a strong impact.

Everyone helped put Copan over the top in the final two quarters.

“We just reassessed at halftime,” Stacy said. “We kind of settled in midway through the third quarter and we kind of took off on them. … We just completely constricted them on defense. … Bluejacket has really improved.” _

GIRLS: Caney Valley 45, Nowata 23

Two-and-a-half months ago the question marks for the Caney Valley girls basketball team loomed larger than a full-grown crop of autumn corn.

The number of players was way down — the experience quotient was even scarcer.

But the astuteness of veteran head coach Deric Longan to pull the right strings and bring his players along at the right pace resulted in a 13-9 regular season record, capped by the 22-point victory Tuesday.

“We had a good first half,” said Longan. “We came out playing well.”

Caney Valley led at halftime, 28-14, and after three quarters, 41-21 and eased off in the final period.

Adesta Henry pumped in 13 and Sydni Brown added 12 to lead Caney Valley. Abby Daigle added eight points, followed by Roxy Hawkins, seven; Jaycee Tant, three; and Aliyah Harvey, two.

Kaylee Bashford buried nine points, followed by Jalyn Trotter with six for Nowata. Kirsten Roberts, Emma Couch and Roxanne Hill also scored.

“We’re excited to start the second season,” said Longan. -

BOYS: Dewey High splits

Dewey 65, Sperry 33: “We kind of punched them right at the beginning and never let up,” said Dewey head coach Lance Knight. Scoring in double figures for Dewey were Karson Johnson, 18; Austin Eastham, 14; and Zach Renfroe, 13. Rounding out the scoring list were Lathe Griggs, five; Jay Murguia, four; Gage Hawkins, three; Cooper Wood, two; Tyler Roach, two; Weston Virden, two; and Will Lawrence, two.

Chelsea 55, Dewey 54: Chelsea’s Ben Hagebusch nailed a late three-pointer “that was kind of a dagger right there,” said Knight. “It was a long three and we had a hand in his face. Kudos to him.”

Eastman topped Dewey with 21 points followed by Tra Hicks, 11; Renfroe, seven; Wood, six; and Johnson, six.

Chelsea surged to leads of 13-0 and 18-3 in the first part of the game, but Dewey made it a one possession game by halftime. Dewey then muscled out to a six-point lead in the third quarter. Chelsea answered and eked out the decision in the thriller. _ By Mike Tupa

_________

GIRLS: Dewey 25, Sperry 20

While the Dewey girl’s offense struggled against Sperry last Monday, the Lady Bulldoggers pulled out a 25-20 victory.

The game was knotted at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter with Mylee Garrison scoring the lone basket for Dewey, who led 11-8 at halftime.

“Our offense struggled but our defense was really solid,” said head coach Michael Sanders. “It was a big win for us.”

Freshman Presley Smith led in scoring with nine, followed by Garrison and Kaci Swan with four each. Chanley Herren added two.

Dewey fell to 2A powerhouse Chelsea, 45-16 on Tuesday.
