With all due respect to the CV Trojans, this outcome produced shock waves throughout the area — not only for the final result but for the incredible second-half rally by Caney Valley.

Dewey led by 22 at halftime, 37-15 — only to be on the bottom looking up after Caney Valley roared through the final two quarters with a 46-19 explosion.

“I’m proud of them,” said Trojan head coach Tug Brinker, who has endured more than his share of rugged losses. “We’ve had injuries, we’ve had sickness. … I can’t say enough about what this means.”

“It was two completely different halves of basketball,” said Dewey head coach Lance Knight. “In the second half … it seems like we were a step behind. They were hitting shots and we weren’t. … Pretty much all that could go wrong went wrong. Our defense was just bad in the second half.”

Dewey came into the game with a 10-8 record and four-game losing streak; Caney Valley (4-15) had lost four in a row.

The first half pretty much played out as expected — Dewey dominated.

But at halftime, Brinker pulled the right buttons including firing his team up by calling on Senior Night Pride.

“I told them we needed to start to attack the rack, take good shots, do well at the free throw line,” he said.

By the end of the third quarter the Trojans had whittled the 22-point margin down to 11 points, 51-40. A few minutes later Caney Valley bolted into the lead and kept charging to victory.

The Trojans tied the game on Zac Longan’s three-pointer and nudged into the lead on Logan Horsman’s trey. Horsman also buried a couple of key late free throws.

“It was our Senior Night and it got so loud in the third quarter you couldn’t hear yourself think,” said Brinker. “It was a great game for us.”

Horsman scored 25 points in the second half and finished with 27 to lead the Trojans. Ethan Brown added 11 points (and 11 rebounds). Longan poured in 13 points, Mav Condry nailed a pair of treys and Zeb Shaw scored four. Shaw also fingered seven rebounds, while a less-than-100-percent healthy Condry added four boards and four steals.

“Not bad for a one-legged man,” Brinker said about Condry, who made a surprise return after missing most of the season due to injury.

For Dewey, Austin Eastman netted 24 points, followed by Zack Renfroe, 12; Lathe Griggs, seven; Kooper Crawford, six; Karson Johnson, five; and Cooper Wood, two.

Trojan seniors honored by the Caney Valley crowd included Horsman, Brown, Shaw, Condry and an injured Shelton Virden.
