LEGACY’S PSALM

-by Michael Jerry Tupa

I watch the morning grass weep
while precocious breezes sweep
away clinging clumps of night,
and gossiping birds take flight

scanning the earth for warm worms,
as sky’s golden eye confirms
opportunity’s new birth,
legacy of soil and earth —

soil to produce healthy food,
on which all life is renewed,
earth to provide a grand stage
on which mankind’s battles rage.

not battles for riches and jewels,
a war between sages and fools
contending for freedom’s soul —
beyond destiny’s control.

So, the dawn sings with fresh voice,
once again, hopeful birds rejoice
reminding us the choice is ours,
whether we seek hell or stars.
