STATE SWIMMING: Lady Bruin sets record; Bartlesville runner-up in both girls and boys' competitions

BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Two double-gold medalists and several silver-quality performances helped create a tidal wave of success this week for the Bartlesville High School swimming program.

As a bonus, junior Addison Howze set a new 6A state record in the girls 100 backstroke (:54.59)

Unfortunately, both the Bruins and Lady Bruins — who are coached by Chad Englehart — finished just shy of bringing home state championship trophies.

The Lady Bruins — who entered the Class 6A state swim meet Monday as the defending state girls championship team — finished as runner-ups to Jenks. The Bruins also earned second place in the boys’ division.

Capturing two gold medals apiece for the Bartlesville girls were Anna Young (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Howze (100 backstroke, 200 individual medley).

Bartlesville’s girls 4x200 medley relay team finished second to earn silver. Relay team members included Howze, Ashlynn Taylor, Young and Calli Richards.

The Bruins didn’t boast any state championship showings. But they cashed in on multiple silver medal performances, including Luke Olsen (50 freestyle) and Parker Shoesmith (200 individual medley).

Rounding out Bartlesville’s major haul of precious medal were numerous third-place (bronze medal) placers.

This list for the Lady Bruins featured: 4x400 freestyle relay team (Howze, Young, Taylor, Annabelle Droege); and 4x200 freestyle relay (Richards, Gabrielle Burke, Erin Roper and Droege).

Finishing third place for the boys were: Shoesmith (100 breast), 4x200 medley relay team (Travis Lief, Shoesmith, Ethan Peterson, Anthony Mann), 4x400 freestyle relay (Olsen, Camden McDonald, Zane Deal, Shoesmith), and 4x200 freestyle relay (Olsen, McDonald, Deal, Peterson).

All 10 of the Bruin participants advanced to either the A Finals or B Finals on Tuesday. The Lady Bruins qualified 12 for the girls’ finals.

Bartlesville High School’s Parker Shoesmith competes earlier in the season. Shoesmith helped guide the boys swim team to a Class 6A runner-up championship.

— Bartlesville girls placed three swimmers among the top five in the 500 freestyle (Young, 1st; Burke, 4th; Roper, 5th).

— Young and Howze both earned four top-three medals.

— Droege, Richards, Taylor and Roper each placed in the top six in three events.

— Olsen, Peterson, McDonald and Shoesmith each grabbed four top-three medals in the boys’ competition.

— In January, the National Federation of High Schools named Englehart as the 2024 Oklahoma Girls Swimming Coach of the Year.
