College roundup: Barta shines for NW Missouri; Garrison finishes 5th at Vanderbilt Invitational

Following is a look at some of the former area high school sports stars who are faring in college competition.

BRADEN GARRISON (Dewey High)
Kennesaw State — Track
Braden Garrison has proven to be part of an invaluable group of men’s track & field athletes for Kennesaw State.
The crew recently captured the Conference USA conference championship to break a 27-year streak of first place by Liberty.
At the Conference USA indoor track championship meet, Garrison — who is a true freshman — heaved the 16-pound shot put a college career-best 52-feet-6.25-inches to finish eighth.
Earlier in the season, Garrison muscled out fifth place in the Vanderbilt Invitational with a shot put mark of 49-6.5.
He also recorded seventh place in the Bob Pollock meet at 50-11.

CAMPBELL BARTA (Bartlesville High)
Northwest Missouri — Track
A year ago Campbell Barta was racking up gold medals for the Bartlesville High School girls track team.
Less than 12 months later, Barta is boosting the Northwest Missouri State track team with her considerable athletic skills.
The true freshman is one of the fastest women in the MIAA Conference. During the recent MIAA indoor track championships Barta burst to fifth place in the women’s 60m dash (:07.551).
She also soared to eighth place in the women’s long jump (18-feet-7-inches).
From the start of the indoor season Barta displayed blazing speed. In her first meet, she ran a NCAA Division II provisional time (:07.61) in the 60m to place third in a meet.
At the Coach Alsup Invite she burst through the event in :07.65 to finished second also earned second in the long jump (18-1.5),

BRENDAN ASHER (Bartlesville High)
Oral Roberts — Baseball
Following a rugged college debut against Missouri State, Brendan Asher has turned in better outings on the mound — but appears to be battling through freshmen growing pains.
Asher has seen action in three games. He recorded his best stats against Illinois State, working two innings, giving up two runs, striking out three and not allowing a walk.

CHESNIE HEWITT (Oklahoma Union High)
Southwestern Oklahoma State — Softball
Chesnie Hewitt leads the main starters in batting (.362), hits (25), doubles (seven), triples (three), total bases (41), slugging percentage (.594) and on-base percentage (.405).
SWOSU owns a 10-11 record.

QUINCEY TURNER (Bartlesville High)
Pittsburg St. — Track
During the recent MIAA indoor championship meet, Turner flew over the pole vault bar at 12-feet-8.75-inches to finish seventh.
