Bartlesville High School girls basketball coach Justyn Shaw said last week he’s been waiting for his team to put together four strong quarters in a game.

The Lady Bruins might have just about that lofty ambition in Friday’s (Jan. 31) 49-31 victory at Sand Springs.

Absent was the prolonged scoring drought and the protracted defensive lapse that have detracted from the Lady Bruins’ effort in several previous contests.

Instead, the Lady Bruins kept at a high level the volume of intensity and symbiotic flow until the final buzzer.

Kennedy Nubel and Sami Sheaffer provided a one-two offensive punch that K.O.’d Sand Springs and powered the Lady Bruins to their 11th win (11-7).

In the boys’ game that followed, Bartlesville dropped a 30-point decision to the Sand Springs Sandites, 72-42.

But the Bruins turned in a strong second half being outscored by only five points in the final two quarters, 30-25, after having trailed by 25 at halftime, 42-17.

Next up, Bartlesville plays host Tuesday to Sapulpa with varsity action beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Following are more details from Friday’s games.

GIRLS: Lady Bruins 49, Sand Springs 31

Nubel continued her sizzling shooting touch. After scoring 16 the night before in a win at Muskogee, she poured in 19 points against Sand Springs.

Sheaffer contributed 17 points, including the final buckets of the second and third quarters.

Nubel dialed in seven points in the first quarter to get the Lady Bruin offense off the launching pad.

By halftime Bartlesville had extended its lead to 13 points, 24-11.

Bartlesville scored only eight points in the third quarter — but also gave up only eight points.

Going into the fourth quarter with a 32-19 lead, Bartlesville erupted for 17 more points while squeezing Sand Springs’ offense to just 12 points.

Emma Zimmerman scored four points in the final period to energize the Lady Bruin attack. Adrianne Flick pumped in Bartlesville’s final basket. Alayah Lunn added four points in the game. Kenzie Denny added a three-pointer in the fourth period.

The Lady Bruins improved to 5-4 in the Frontier Valley Conference, to keep them in contention for third place in the standings.

NOTE: The 18-point margin of victory was the second-biggest in conference play by the Lady Bruins.

BOYS: Sand Springs 72, Bartlesville 42

Nash Zervas scored double-digit points and Trae Collins buried three three-pointers to help Bartlesville (3-14, 0-9) score 40-or-more points for the fourth time in a conference game.

But it was a tale of two halves.

The Bruins tallied only 17 points in the opening two quarters, spreading the scoring among five different players, including two three-pointers by Collins and one by Luke Massey.

In the third quarter, Bartlesville dropped in 11 points — five of them by Hudson Eads.

Bartlesville played Sand Springs point-for-point in the final period, 14-14.

Jordan Turner — who flirted with double-digit points — scored five in the final period. Zervas knocked down a three-pointer for the game’s final basket.

Dennis Duncan and Hunter Holmes also contributed to the Bartlesville point total.
