BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Following are summaries of recent area high school basketball games during the time period of Jan. 19-22

__________

BOYS: Barnsdall 49, Caney Valley 45 (January 20)

The Caney Valley Trojans have been impacted by plenty of luck this season.

Pretty much all of it bad.

Among fate’s “love” taps has been the injury loss of the Trojans’ top offensive producer and a wave of illness.

Even so, Caney Valley has remained competitive — but didn’t have enough firepower to hold off an improving Barnsdall team.

“We led most the way,” said Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker, but we’ve had the flu and were down one starter.”

And apparently other players.

Brinker said he hoped he could throw at least five players on the floor in this weekend’s Caney Valley tournament.

Logan Thompson and Speck Gann each scored eight points in the loss to Barnsdall. Zack Longan added seven points “and had a pretty good game,” Brinker added.

Barnsdall (8-8) is red hot with three-straight wins and a 5-1 mark in its last six contests. Caney Valley (3-10) has dropped three straight.

__________

GIRLS: Caney Valley 41, Barnsdall 40 OT (January 20)

The Lady Trojans picked up a win over Barnsdall, 41-40, in overtime.

Caney Valley (8-5) is led by Deric Longan. The Lady Panthers improved to 8-8 on the season.

__________

Copan High School’s Elyzabeth Odum (21) goes up for a shot during an earlier season game. The Lady Hornets defeated Oklahoma Union, 40-34 on January 21, 2025.

GIRLS: Copan 40, Oklahoma Union 34 (January 21)

Elyzabeth Odum poured in 16 points to power the Lady Hornets past a scrappy Oklahoma Union team.

“It wasn’t a pretty game but we’ll take a win,” said Copan coach Kristy Bryan.

Rounding out Copan’s scorers were Kam Vann, seven; Rylee Preston, five; Zoey Secondine, five; Amy Nittler, four; and Kaylee Woodworth, three.

Secondine added nine rebounds and Odum handed out six assists.

Copan trailed by eight at halftime but revved up in the third quarter to take control “and went on to finish it out,” said Bryan.

The Lady Hornets held on despite struggling at the free throw line and losing Odum the last two minutes due to fouls.

“Our girls handled the ball well and we didn’t have a lot of turnovers,” Bryan said. “We need to do a better job of making free throws.”

Copan (3-9) won for the second time in four games. Oklahoma Union fell to 1-13.

Copan High School’s Teegan Caron (21) puts up a shot during earlier season action. The Hornets fell to Oklahoma Union, 65-45 on January 21, 2025.

BOYS: Oklahoma Union 65, Copan 45 (January 21)

“This score was a little deceiving,” said Copan coach Kolton Stacy. “We were right there. … We were down 15 at half but in the third quarter we cut it to nine.”

The Hornets came up short during a few key plays that might have altered the storyline, Stacy added.

Copan continues to threaten in the fourth quarter but “we just couldn’t get it over the hump,” Stacy continued. “They pulled away in the last two minutes.”

Shooter Brewington buried 24 points for Copan, including hitting 11-of-25 field goals. But no one else stepped up in a serious supporting role offensively.

“He’s Batman and we’ve got to get a Robin,” said Stacy. “We’ve got two or three guys capable of being Robbins. They’ve just got to step up.”

Kane Foreman started to do that late in the game by hitting three three-pointers to finish with nine points.

“It took a little too long for him to get going,” said Stacy, noting Oklahoma Union hit 13 three-pointers.

“We handled their pressure really well and didn’t turn it over too much,” Stacy said. “The story of the game was they hit 13 threes.”

Oklahoma Union’s Kane Nash scored 14 points.

Oklahoma Union (7-8) is 4-2 in its most recent six games. Copan fell to 9-4 with a four-game winning streak snapped.

Dewey High School’s Tyler Roach (13) takes a shot against Caney Valley’s Logan Thompson (12) in an earlier season game. Dewey fell to Oologah, 69-54 on January 21, 2025.

_________

BOYS: Oologah 69, Dewey 54 (January 21)

Despite a 25-point output by Austin Eastman the Dewey Bulldoggers didn’t generate enough firepower to knock off the stubborn Oologah Mustangs.

Rounding out Dewey’s scorers were Kooper Crawford, eight; Zach Renfroe, six; Karson Johnson, six; Cooper Wood, six; Lathe Griggs, three.

“Oologah has a good team,” Dewey head coach Lance Knight said. “They have a bunch of seniors. We were in the game. It was a 10 point game at half. Numerous times we got it under 10. … We kind of held their top guys in check, but a couple of their other guys stepped up.”

Dewey failed to get enough defensive stops to disrupt the Mustangs. Even so, Knight praised his team’s efforts

“I was proud of my guys,” he said. “They battled. This was kind of one of those games where I knew it would be tough, especially on their homecourt.”

Dewey fell to 3-3 in January. The Doggers play this weekend in the Caney Valley tourney.

__________

GIRLS: Dewey 48, Oologah 44 (January 21)

The Lady Bulldoggers got a big win over No. 11 Oologah, 48-44.

Dewey, who is led by Michael Sanders, improved to 6-6 on the season.
